CineCarib: Voices from the Dutch Caribbean and Surinamese Diaspora

On the occasion of 50 years of Surinamese independence (November 25), we present on Thursday, November 27 a unique short film program that highlights contemporary Dutch-Caribbean and Surinamese (diasporic) cinema.

We will screen Sign and See the World by Sofi Graauw, Sunny by German Gruben, and Hobi by Aramis Garcia Gonzalez — three acclaimed new short films by Dutch-Caribbean and Surinamese (diasporic) filmmakers.

After the screenings, director Sofi Graauw, producer Naomi Wills, DOP and producer Ewoud Bon, and director Aramis Garcia Gonzalez will take part in a panel discussion on the current state and future of Dutch-Caribbean and Surinamese (diasporic) cinema, moderated by Aruban-Dutch radio host and cultural producer Angel Misier.

Sign and See the World
Sofi Graauw | The Netherlands & Suriname | 2025 | 10 min | Dutch & Sranan | Dutch subtitles
A short documentary uncovering the forgotten story of three young Surinamese men who left home during WWII to fight for the liberation of the Netherlands. Drawn by the promise of “sign and see the world,” they faced racism, hardship, and courage on the battlefield.
World premiere at Go Short 2025 — winner of the Audience Award and Young Jury Prize; selected for the Golden Calf competition.


Sunny
German Gruber | Curaçao | 2025 | 17 min | Papiamentu | Dutch subtitles
A tender coming-of-age story about Fito, a young guitarist torn between love and ambition as he prepares to leave Curaçao. Gruber’s subtle direction captures youth, longing, and the bittersweet pull of home.
Premiered at the Curaçao International Film Festival; international premiere at Tribeca; winner of six awards at the Playa Film Festival in Aruba.


Hobi
Aramis Garcia Gonzalez | The Netherlands & Aruba | 2025 | 28 min | Papiamentu & Dutch | Dutch subtitles
To save his marriage, Hobi sells his beloved car while juggling fatherhood and pride. As the day unravels, his small lies spiral into a life-changing choice.
Premiered at IFFR 2025; selected for festivals in Curaçao and Trinidad & Tobago; nominated for the Golden Calf for Best Short Film.
