Gery Mendes presents ‘A tale of Kriolo times’
MC, musician and theater maker Gery Mendes performs a cinematic music concert in the Lantaren Window in Rotterdam called ‘A tale of Kriolo times’ in conjunction with the Black Soil film festival. A one of a kind experience driven by music, storytelling, movement and film. In recent years, Mendes has been to his parents’ birthplace several times for extended periods of time. He gained the necessary inspiration here and dug deeper into his roots. He achieved great acclaim with his energetic debut ‘This is not an album, this is a phase’ (2007) under the name GMB. Seven years later there was the musical, melancholic successor Caminho (2014). Ten years later he returns to the pop stage with experiences/suitcases from different disciplines/worlds to unpack.
A comeback from years in the making. ‘A tale of Kriolo times’ is a journey through Rotterdam-Cape Verdean history. A revelation/scoop of never-before-heard and brand new songs in interaction with film and movement. A gift to the Rotterdam audience, in the run-up to Mendes’ next album. With his 5-piece formation, Mendes brings a sound clash of traditional West African, especially old Cape Verdean, Angolan, music (Batuku, Funana, Morna, Koladera, Mazurka and Tabanka) and the genre it all started with, Hip Hop.
